Day 46 – Jean-Talon Market (Marché Jean-Talon) in Little Italy, Montréal

The Jean-Talon Market is tucked away in Little Italy, but we found it thanks to a couple of green signs with arrows and the words Marché Jean-Talon. Sunday afternoon shopping was still fairly busy, but the number of outdoor vendors has lessened due to the temperature. We were told that this Market is the place to be on a warm day – so many tables overflowing with brightly colored veggies and fruits and other wares. The deals there are impressive, and the produce is beautifully fresh and often local. There is something very charming and intimate about purchasing your food from those who have grown it. It brings a sense of community back to the shopping experience. We were thrilled to discover that we could buy tomatoes, leeks, potatoes, broccoli, apples and cabbage (the list goes on) all grown in Quebec. Of interest to me especially was the Romanesco Broccoli which is also called coral broccoli and looked like a Christmas tree cauliflower or a food that space people might eat. We are planning on heading back there as soon as we can to stock up. If we had it our way, we would never shop at a big box grocery store again.
